Keeping safe from Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly poisonous gas produced by the incomplete burning of any carbon fuel (like natural gas). CO can be deadly and is especially dangerous because you can’t see, taste, or smell it, and some symptoms mimic the effects of viruses, so it can be tricky to spot.

That’s why having a carbon monoxide alarm in your home is so important, as your CO alarm will emit a sound when CO is detected.

The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Regulations changed on 1 October 2022 to include social housing providers. It means that social housing providers legally must provide Carbon Monoxide detectors in all rooms where there is a gas burning appliance installed, for example, your kitchen.

For both your safety and to comply with these regulations, we’re working with our gas contractor, K&T heating to ensure all our homes have a CO alarm installed, and we’re doing what we can to reach everyone.

We understand that many of our residents lead busy lives, and sometimes it can be tricky to find a time to be home to have your CO alarm installed. If K&T can’t get access to your home, a CO alarm will be delivered to you with instructions on how to install the alarm, ensuring safety and compliance. While this is a last resort option, we hope it will be helpful for those who don’t have a lot of time to spend at home.

If you are contacted about having your CO alarm installed, we would appreciate your cooperation in allowing us to install it in your home, as it’s essential for the safety of you and your neighbours.

Once your CO alarm is installed, it’s recommended to test the alarm once a week to ensure it’s working. If your alarm isn’t working, it’s important that you get in touch with us so that we replace the alarm.
