Black History Month

Reflecting on Black History Month 2022
As we come towards the end of October, we wanted to reflect on what we have learned and shared at THCH this Black History Month.
The month is intended to recognise the contribution and achievements of those with African or Caribbean heritage. It's also an opportunity for people to learn more about the effects of racism and how to challenge negative stereotypes. This year’s theme was ‘Time for Change: Action Not Words’, which focused on the double-burden black people carry; experiencing racism and discrimination and then being expected to fix the problem themselves.
Lunch and Learn
To mark this year’s Black History Month, we held a Black History Month Lunch and Learn for all our office people. Delicious food that celebrates black culture was brought in and shared by all. Whilst we ate, we heard from our colleagues about their personal experience of racism and their thoughts on how to tackle it.
A key message that we all took from the lunch, was that we all have a responsibility to educate ourselves on topics surrounding racism. The event displayed the curiosity, respect, and engagement that we love from our team.
Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Team
Conversations surrounding racism should not just be a once-a-year event. Every day we encourage these conversations. We are proud to have an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion team. They help facilitate open conversations in our workplace, and signpost us to the information and events out there that help to broaden our knowledge and understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Tower Hamlets has one of the most diverse populations in the UK, and we are proud that this is reflected in our community.
Can we do more?
We always want to improve what we do. Feel free to share your experiences and feedback with us.
